My name is Christine Marquette and I’m a registered
and licensed dietitian and I’m going to talk to you about what potassium gluconate does.
This is actually used, typically as a prescription medication to treat people who have low blood
levels of potassium. There could be a variety of reasons for somebody to develop low levels
of potassium, say for example, they’re taking a diuretic for a high blood pressure, and
it causes their body to actually leech potassium. There are several different diuretics that
can cause this problem, so in that case, their doctor may prescribe potassium gluconate.
There are a couple of other issues that may be going on in the body that will cause low
levels of potassium. Somebody may have experienced severe trauma to their body, a lot of burns,
or they have may…they may have lost a lot of blood if they were in some type of car
accident. At that point, they may temporarily also need potassium gluconate to replenish
their potassium stores. The thing to keep in mind is that this isn’t something that
you would use just on your own. It can be potentially lethal if you do take an overdose.
It can actually cause you to have a heart attack. So potassium gluconate is something
that should only be used under the advice of a physician to treat low levels of potassium.
Typically, it’s only going to be used short term unless you are taking a medication that
is constantly causing you low blood levels of potassium, at which point you would have
to take potassium gluconate on a regular basis.
